Lovely robots can’t taste wine

Thanks to The Daily Mail today for the breaking news that somewhere in Spain, scientists have developed a ‘robot sommelier’ which can detect the difference between dry, medium and sweet Cava.

Even as a great lover of technology, I fail to see how this dramatic development can benefit anyone – surely taking advantage of the human ability to sense something, then articulate it, is one of our unique selling points?! And as taste is such a personal thing, I feel that the subtlety of individuals interpretation is what makes wine so amazing and varied.

It seems that for only a few generations, we have begun to cook for pleasure rather than purely for fuel, and I wish to develop this as far as we can before we hand this very important job over to machines. There is still a missing ingredient to the machine-made model, and this, without fear of sounding creepy – Is love.
