Aperitif time at Borough Wines

Gin Fizz

It’s no secret that we’re all huge wine fans at Borough Wines. We’ve got hundreds of wines and now have two restaurants to drink them in. However, there is another kind of drink which also excites us, and that is the Aperitif.  Both the French and the Italians are masters of it, and have masterfully and seamlessly encompassed it into their dining cultures.

The idea of the Aperitif is to stimulate the appetite before the meal. It’s alcoholic, but not anything too strong. This allows for a delicate and smooth easing into the evenings events, encouraging diners to put aside their thoughts and focus on the meal ahead.

Over at Mayfields, our new restaurant assistant manager Lee Johnson takes great care in maintaining a short but focused list of aperitif drinks. ‘I enjoy a good aperitif as it’s a nice sharpener before a meal, a little tipple to ready the stomach and loose the mind a bit’.

Lee has kindly given us his recipe for their Gin Fizz which he makes using Sipsmith Gin

60ml Sipsmith (or Sacred) Gin
15ml lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
15ml lime juice
2tsp fine sugar
125ml soda
Garnish cucumber or rosemary

Mix and shake the first 4 ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Strain into a collins glass filled with ice. Top with soda. Enjoy!

World gin day is this Saturday 15th June
